California in for a devastating quake!

New analysis: California in for a devastating quake within 30 years.

A strong and potentially deadly earthquake is virtually certain to strike on one of California's major seismic faults with a magnitude of at least 6.7 within the next 30 years, scientists said Monday in releasing the first official forecast of statewide earthquake probabilities.

By their calculations the probability of such a strong and damaging quake hitting somewhere the Golden state is now more than 99 percent.

Devastating quake

Weren't we just talking about this?

Awesome! We're going to hell! We're going to hell! Shit, I live about 1/2 a mile away from one of the faults mentioned. According to what I've read in the past, this fault hasn't had any major movements in the past 300 years, and it's WAY overdue for a big one. In fact, in another study I read that it's very likely that the next big earthquake to hit California will originate on this fault, and will make the '89 San Francisco earthquake and the '94 Los Angeles earthquakes seem like merry-go-round rides at the fair. We're fucked.

That prediction sounds spot on, and it won't surprise anybody that lives there. California has survived 6.7 and greater mag quakes in the past, and it will again. If you're unlucky enough to be in the vicinity of the epicenter of a large enough quake there's a chance you may perish. So? What are Californians supposed to do? Flee the state because somewhere along the thousands of miles of fault lines there will be a high mag quake within the next 30 years? Not gonna happen.

If a mag 8 quake happens to impact a congested urban area like SF or LA naturally you're looking at more serious complications; but nobody's going to leave either city based on that concern, or over the concern of nuclear/biological terrorist attacks, which would certainly be more devastating.

I have been hearing for a couple of decades how they are due for a big one.The last really big one was the 1906 San Francisco quake. That fault as I remember it has a big one on average about every 75 years. While many buildings are much more prepared than they were in 1906 many are not.And given the much higher population levels the death toll may be tremendous.

what about the 89 san fransisco quake?

what about the 89 san fransisco quake?

I had just stepped out of the shower. After drying off, it was time to get my boxers on. In the process of doing so, one leg goes up and there she goes ! The 7.0 almost rocked me over into the door lol !
Being approx. 15 (line of sight) miles from Loma Prieta Peak, I thought that life as I knew it was about to end !
I recall wondering how everybody made out at the historic Bay Area World Series featuring the SF Giants and The Oakland A's. This is where a battery operated radio comes in handy as there was an extensive power outage !)

The (approx) 6' X 10' window pane was shaking for about an hour after the quake ! Really a surreal experience.

I don't buy this bullshit about an earthquake in the next 30 years ! How the hell do they know ?
They're just guessing to justify their jobs, IMO.

It's 50 / 50 as far as I'm concerned.

After a prediction of 99.7% probability in the next 30 years the scientist better hope one happens or they're going to have to eat some humble pie. I guess this is just one of the consequences to living on a dynamic planet.

The same thing has been said where I live for the past 30 years, and it hasnt happened yet, but it could happen any second

Are they older? Maybe, they will be dead by then? :dunno:

I think it will be sooner.

great...i just booked a trip to San Francisco, and im not the lucky type...

This isn't exactly news. A big-sized California quake has been predicted for as long as I can remember. Always in the 50-100 year in the future range.

The only thing for certain is that for each year that goes by without the "big one" we are that much closer to when the "big one" really does occur. It's inevitable.

I'm with Dean Wormer- this is hardly news. They've now predicted the mother of all quakes, the mother of all tsunamis, and the mother of all (Fill in disaster) for some time now.

I'd say that before Dr. Obvious released this "news", we were all pretty sure there were fault lines in California that were going to rumble big time at some point in the future.

And remember those three words scientists are afraid to say:

"We don't know"
