Romney earns PolitiFact’s ‘Lie of the Year’ for "Jeeps made in China"

Well, at least Mittens won something in 2012. I said when this first came to light that if he lost Ohio (which I believed that he would), he could count this as the tipping point. What a stupid thing to say or stand behind! Romney should have shied away from the Joseph Goebbels strategy: "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." Not always, Mittens. Not always... :nono:

Mitt Romney's claim in a campaign ad that President Barack Obama "sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China" earned PolitiFact's "Lie of the Year," the site announced on Wednesday.

"The Jeep ad was brazenly false," Angie Drobnic Holan wrote in her analysis.

The Romney campaign ran the ad in the final weeks of the campaign, drawing sharp rebukes from the automakers and public condemnation from the Obama campaign.

Romney first claimed Jeep was moving to China in a late October campaign speech in Ohio, citing "reports," which he later identified in his ad as a story by Bloomberg News.

But Chrysler immediately rejected the claim, saying the company was reviewing adding production in China, not moving production out of the United States. Chrysler also noted that the Bloomberg story was misinterpreted.

It appeared that the false interpretation was initially made by the Washington Examiner's Paul Bedard, who wrote about the Bloomberg story Oct. 25. Bedard's claim was then circulated by the Drudge Report.

Democrats, including the Obama campaign, used Romney's decision to stand by the false claim against him, attacking Romney's honesty.

"After Romney's false claim of Jeep outsourcing to China, Chrysler itself has refuted Romney's lie," an announcer read in an Obama campaign ad that painted Romney as "wrong on Ohio jobs."

PolitiFact suggested Wednesday that the ad was partly responsible for Romney's loss.

"People often say that politicians don't pay a price for deception, but this time was different: A flood of negative press coverage rained down on the Romney campaign, and he failed to turn the tide in Ohio, the most important state in the presidential election," Holan wrote.

Yeah. More of his lies should be exposed, actually. He has lost a great deal of credibility. It would be good to eliminate him as a political possibility permanently.

So, Politifact has "proved" this statement as false, because the accused denied it? That holds very little water. Time will tell if this claim is indeed true or false, but to determine the credibility of a statement by taking the accused's refutation of the claim is absurd. We are to accept Chrysler's response to these claims as fact, with them fully aware of the backlash that would result if they were to admit these claims were true? That's like Politifact saying that it is a fact that Enron never did anything wrong because Jeff Skilling denied any wrongdoing.

I may be wrong, but don't you have a legal background, Rey? How many defendants in the history of the legal system were guilty as sin, yet pleaded "not guilty?" Point is, time will flesh out the validity of these claims, but simply taking the accused's word for it has never been a standard practice in determining truth.

Other than taking some real property and contract law courses many years ago, no, I don't really have a legal background. My background is almost entirely in economics, banking and business. But the point being here, Romney made a purely speculative claim, it was denied by the company and you're saying that we should give him the benefit of the doubt because it might happen at some point in the (near or distant) future?

I don't have a legal background but I know my way around Toledo North Assembly, TSAP, JNAP, Warren Truck, Belvidere and Brampton, Ontario extremely well. TNAP, TSAP and JNAP are the primary Jeep production facilities for North America, as well as a fair amount of export. There may be some Jeep production at the Mexican operations, but I haven't visited those, so I'm not sure. What I'm saying is, the primary production facilities are here, the suppliers are primarily here and trying to re-source and manage a supply chain from China would hardly be a cost effective undertaking, IMO. Labor is a key cost driver in manufacturing, but lead times and supply chain management also contribute to cost. You have to ask yourself, even with cheaper Chinese labor, where would be the cost savings in having to ship components from North America to China (some of the supplied components are patented and could not just be "picked up" by Chinese based suppliers), and then having to ship the vehicles back to North and South America???

We're not BFF's or lunchroom pals, but I have met and know Ralph Gilles. And the reason that relatively mild mannered and usually eloquent Ralph jumped all up in Donald Trump's shit on Twitter was because Bozo Trump was repeating the very same lie that Mittens was telling.

It's not a question of a defendant denying wrong doing. It's a question of why would one buy a $500 gun to rob a gas station of $50. The devil is always in the details. And the fine details suggest that Romney's claim was a lie (or speculation, if you prefer) which was simply designed to scare people into voting for him. But what it did was piss people off and it cost him Ohio. I know a lot of people within Chrysler and this steaming pile of poo that Mitt was spreading really did piss a lot of people off in Ohio - not just Chrysler employees.

Right, but my point is that to deem it "the lie of the year" without being party to, or even acknowledging the existence of both the partnership and discussions between Fiat and Guangzhou is just as speculative, and perhaps even more misleading. And to discount, by not even acknowledging, the Bloomberg article in which Mike Manley, chief operating officer of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia states "Fiat is in 'very detailed conversations' with its Chinese partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., about making Jeeps in the world’s largest auto market (China)," is irresponsible, misleading and smells just a tad biased. I'm not saying that the claim by Romney didn't piss people off, just that to call it "the biggest lie of the year," is laughable.

I love how Romney is now always being photographed in public areas now. Like he is trying to trick us into believe he's like everyone else.

I suspect that they will be making Jeeps in China shortly. But that has nothing to do with the Jeeps being made in Ohio and Michigan. The company that I currently work for has partnered with a Chinese firm and will be making certain products there. When this news got out, many of our employees (and one rather stupid plant manager) began rumors that a particular facility was being shut down and the production was moving to China. Just as with Chrysler, no such thing was being planned or was happening. Opening a facility in one place does not necessarily mean the closure of another. Romney is a private equity guy. He knows this.

Romney got kicked in the balls over this because it was not just a simple mistake over semantics or a speculative question - it was stated as fact and was designed and implemented to scare people.

I will agree with you that in a political year, it's hard to pick (just) one lie out as the biggest. There were so, so many (on both sides).

Oh, I thought the lie of the year was the Obama administration saying the Benghazi attack was a spontaneous reaction to a youtube video when they knew from the get go it was an organized attack from al qaeda. But people actually died in that case so not as egregious a lie as Romney's about jeeps.

The american public gets the government they want and the government they deserve. Enjoy.

Oh sorry, this wasn't coverered by the media. Benghazi is a town in Libya east of Tripoli. The U.S. had a consulate there. The U.S. ambassador had asked for heightened security because of threats from terrorist groups. The U.S. state dept denied that request. On Sept. 11. 2012 a group of Islamists attacked the compound killing the U.S. ambassador and 3 other americans. The White House immediately categorized this as a spontaneous attack based on some youtube video of some guy criticizing islam when they had received emails and drone surveillance indicating otherwise.

Oh why the fuck do I bother?

Romney lied about jeeps made in China.

I'm surrounded by f'n morons.

Apparently that came in 8th. Maybe you should have voted early & often to get your choice higher in the poll. :dunno:

She is looney, but I still find her hot. Call me looney for that.

Hey, I just traded in my Saturn that was made in Mexico for a Toyota that was made in Indiana.

I looked at the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I couldn't make out those funny Chineese characters on all the dials.

She's not my cup of tea, but I understand where you're coming from with Silly Sarah from Wasilla. People think I'm joking (or crazy... or both), but I find Michele "Batshit Crazy" Bachmann to be a hot little number. Yeah, she's as goofy as the day is long and the wires in her head are all tangled up, but there's just something about her that reminds me of a real estate agent that I had a no-tell hotel encounter with years ago - and she knew how to work it! Plus, Michele is married to Sweet Marcus (the only gay he needs to "pray away" is his own), so I figure she hasn't had a good going over for years & years & years. Maybe that's why she is so kooky and frustrated. I just know I could help her silly ass with that. I would just forbid her from speaking while we were together. We'd probably have to go with a ballgag, since she doesn't know when to shutup.

Remember when she took W. Bush by surprise and gave him a big smooch at a political meet & greet? And ol' Georgie gave her one of those "hey, easy there, babe" looks. She's a keeper. I'm tellin' you! :rofl2:

Crazy women need love too. :shy:

I'm with you brother. Logic and reasoning are taboo to liberals. By the way, did you ever read about Politofact (or Politocrap as what we call it here in Ohio) dissing on Democrats? The only time I read about Politofact and Democrats was to put them on a pedestal for telling the truth! WTF is that about? Politofact is biased, lying, one-sided, unfair, stupid and worthless.

And yet, I remember the debate where Romney tried to spin what was or wasn't said just after the Benghazi attack... and he even fucked that up! It's like his foot and his mouth were drawn to each other whenever he opened his trap. Even when there was a sliver of truth in what he was saying, he'd lose the plot. But on the Jeep ad, he should have known how badly he needed Ohio, And, especially given his background, he should have known not to do what he did. If you want to have kids, it's usually a bad idea to cock a loaded .44, point it at your genitals and then pull the trigger. But that's what Mittens did. You people can cry in your soup all you want. It is what it is.

Homie looks like he's been on a 5 day drunk in this picture taken after the election for one reason: he screwed the pooch!
